Bought Your First Equine Horse? 2 Tips To Keep It Healthy

If you just purchased a new equine horse you need to learn how to care for it. This is especially true since you have never owned a horse before. Below are two tips to help you get started so you can keep your new horse healthy and enjoy it for a long time:

Enough Water

It is important that your equine horse gets enough water, especially on days that it is hot and humid. Talk with a veterinarian about how much water your horse should receive each day. This will depend on how active the horse is.

Hang the water bucket on the door of your horse's stall or near the food. The water should always be kept clean and cool and put in an area the horse could easily have access to the water anytime they want.

Clean the water bucket at least once a week and check it each time for any leaks. If you do not clean it regularly bacteria can easily build up inside the bucket and cause your horse to become sick. You can use soap and water to clean it the bucket. Make sure you scrub the inside of the bucket well and then rinse it well to ensure all soap is gone.

You can also soak your horse's hay in water before you feed it to give it more fluid consumption. Moisture-rich treats also work well, such as watermelon or apples. Give your horse bran mash that is watered down.

The Right Food

The food you feed your equine horse is important to keep it healthy.  Your horse can eat grass and hay but they should also have other nutrients and vitamins. Because of this, you should also give your horse some horse feed.

When you start shopping for horse feed you will see there are many different types. One thing to consider is the age of your horse. A younger horse should have more protein and you should be able to find food that is made for younger horses. If your horse is older, there is special horse feed made for older horses.

If your horse is going to be very active, the feed should have more carbohydrates to help give the horse energy. Having extra protein in the food is also beneficial as it will help keep your horse's muscles and joints in great condition.

The best thing to do is to talk with a veterinarian about the best type of food for your horse. They can tell you where to buy it and how much food your horse should eat each day.
